Is My First Bitcoin a registered nonprofit?
Yes. My First Bitcoin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in Delaware, USA (EIN 88-3728599). We are independent and non-profit by design — free from government and corporate control, and focused entirely on expanding access to free, impartial Bitcoin education.
How is my gift used?
Your gift funds the people and the open-source infrastructure behind free Bitcoin education worldwide: the My First Bitcoin team, the open-source curriculum and tools used across the network, educator training, and community programs like our unconferences — and beyond. Above all, it keeps every bit of it free and independent. You can follow where the money goes on our public impact dashboard.
What do you do with donated Bitcoin?
We run on Bitcoin. Donated Bitcoin is held in our treasury in cold storage — not parked in a bank and not sold off. We hold and spend in Bitcoin, and reach for fiat only as a last resort, when we have no other choice. When you give in Bitcoin, it stays Bitcoin, working for education.
Why do you prefer Bitcoin over dollar donations?
Because we hold, use, and spend in Bitcoin, a Bitcoin gift goes straight to work. A dollar gift has to be converted to Bitcoin before we can use it, and that purchase carries a fee — so giving Bitcoin in the first place skips that step and that cost, and more of your gift reaches the mission. Dollars are welcome and put to good use; Bitcoin is simply the most efficient way to give.
Do you accept money from governments?
No — we never have, and never will. Government funding would compromise the independence and impartiality that make our education worth trusting. We are funded by people and mission-aligned supporters, not by states.
Do you offer sponsorships or donor perks?
No. We accept donations, but we remain independent and impartial: we do not offer perks, endorsements, or anything that could be seen as a quid pro quo affecting what we teach. The most a supporter or company receives is our public thanks and a logo — never influence. See our independence policy for exactly what we will and won't do.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
My First Bitcoin is a US 501(c)(3), so contributions are tax-deductible in the United States to the extent the law allows. Giving Bitcoin directly (rather than selling it first) can also let you deduct its fair market value and avoid capital-gains tax on the appreciation — for gifts over $5,000 you'll need a qualified appraisal, and we sign the donee section of your Form 8283 (acknowledging receipt, not the value). If you're outside the US you can still give, but deductibility depends on your own country's rules. We can't give tax advice — please check with your advisor.
Will I get a receipt?
Yes — every gift gets a written acknowledgment for your records, and for gifts of $250 or more US law requires one. Because we offer no goods or services in return, your receipt says exactly that, which keeps your gift fully deductible. Need a receipt or have a question about a gift? Email [email protected].
Can I give anonymously?
Yes. You can be entirely anonymous to the public — appear by a pseudonym, an npub, or nothing at all. If you'd like a tax receipt we'll need your identity privately to issue it, but that never has to be public. On-chain and Lightning gifts are the most private path.
What are the ways to give?
One-time or monthly — in Bitcoin over Lightning, on-chain, or by card. Monthly card gifts are auto-charged and you can cancel anytime; monthly Bitcoin is self-serve, so you always keep custody and we never pull funds. Larger or private gifts can be arranged directly — just reach out.
